A Miners Nightmares

Mining Disaster

In Chile on august 5th 33 male adults (oldest 63 Mario Gomez) mining for copper & gold were eating their lunch in a cave when rocks weighing approximately 70,000 tons came tumbling down trapping them in their coffin.

The thing that the rescuers worry about the most is panic attacks & blood clots. Since the miners have been trapped for 2 months with no sunlight the miners have to wear special sunglasses to protect their eyes when they get out.

The rescue is underway, they start by drilling a shaft for the capsule (10 ft tall,21 inches wide) to drop down. The rescuers have put a video camera in the capsule thats gonna be fixed on their eyes so they can tell/see signs of panic attacks. The miners are estimated 2300 feet underground so it will take about 48 hours to get all miners out.

(In conclusion) i'm sure it will be a relief when they get out, everyone wishes families good luck

and all we can do is hope this will work smoothly. They are sure to get lots of money when their free.

On Thursday the 14th at about 3:00 clock all the miners were out.

The Chile miners

On August the fifth, 33 men from Chile were mining copper and gold but 700,000 tons of rock fell and trapped the men. The oldest person down in the mine is 63 year old Mario Gomez. The mine is 2300 feet deep.

The problem for the men is if panic attacks start. They've been down there for 68 days. If they get blood clots it won't be a nice sight and they need sun light.

The rescue capsule is 21 inches wide and is ten feet high. They needed to drill a hole down first to send food, water and supplies. The capsule takes about 20 minutes to come up and down for one person. It will take 48 hours (2 days) for the whole operation.

In conclusion we all hope the men get out safely. They will want to see there family's because of how long they've been down there. They will get lots of money from interviews.

Room 13 have been learning about production lines for our inquiry over the last fortnight. We learnt that one tiny mess up in at the start could impact hugely on the final product. We also learnt that each organisation on the market would have a special department for each section of the product. Within those departments they would have specialists taught to make the best sub-section of that product to the best quality avaliable. The advantages of using a production line to make these paper planes was that it was faster, more efficient and made a better quality finished product. I walk around to seconds beach,

I hope the cliffs don't fall,

I walk and talk about the hills,

The life boats swim and swim out to save someone,

the waves crash up againsted the point like kid jumping,

in a puddles.

I jump up and down the sand dunes, as it erodes even more,

a person told me that's a no no don't do that any more.

CAGE'S: bird's should not be allowed to be keeped in cage's because god has given bird's wing's so they can fly but if they are keeped in cage's they can not fly so bird's should not be allowed to be keeped in cage's.

HUNTING: You should not be allowed to shoot animals just for fun, if you shoot an animal you have to eat it.

In Conclusion tiger's should not die for a bone or skin elephant's should not be killed for a tusk this has to STOP!!!

Animal Cruelty

Imagine if someone got killed because someone else wanted their teeth or your bones. How would you like it your pet was in this situation.

Did you know tigers get killed just for bones in their body. How would you like to be killed just for bones in your body and the rest go to waste? Cruelty is one fashion statement that we can all do without. Because animals have their rights but some people don 't seam to know that.

Get a fell for fur slam your fingers in a car door. (Anonymous, on the use of steel traps to capture fur-bearing animals.) Men don't even care they just sell the fur for MONEY!!! Poaching is a major sport and these are the animals that are suffering Tigers, Elephants, Leapords, Jaguars (Panthers) Animals have their rights.

God loved the birds and invented trees. Man loved the birds and invented cages. I think some animals need to be in cages and some don't. Some that don't are Pigs, Birds. Some that do are

dangerous animals. Animals have their rights!!!

In conclusion =Tigers keep on getting killed for bones and fur, everyday in poaching they kill heaps of an animal then when most of that animal has gone they move onto another animal,most animals need to be let free fro cages.

Animal Welfare

Imagine you as a Ferret, you're nosing around and something hits you in the back, you feel drowsy and notice a blue dart hanging out of you're back and you hear laughter as you're eyes droop down. when you wake up you sight a shinning blade is powerfully swinging at your back you try to escape but before you can the knife makes contact with you're back.

They skin you and then either throw you out or give you to some ferocious dogs e.g Pitbulls or Rotweilers. The killers take you're skin to the black market and sell the skin to a fashion designer for a couple of notes.

Then the fashion designer will give it to a model who will treat it badly, like stretching it or at the end of a catwalk she might throw it into the crowd.If not the skin will be stored away and will never be used again, but if the model does throw it the person might take it home and use it as FURniture.Is it worth it?

Back to the black market, this time a hunter sells a live animal in a tiny cage for animals half it's size, a lab tester might buy it now for about $70-$150. The lab tester will now test sick experiments on this poor and innocent animal looking for pray, e.g new food or drinks or maybe even dishwashing liquid. this has to STOP.

In conclusion caught poachers should have to go jail, fur should only be treated as clothing only on it's original animals back and one of the worst, lab testing imagine you be forced to drink or eat food that could damage you're health which was once perfect.

As Sri Aurobindo told us "life is life whether in a cat, dog , or man. There is no difference between a cat or a man. The idea of difference is a human conception of a man's on advantage" Who's side are you on?

Imagine if you were being skinned alive for your flesh. This needs to stop because other animals are going to be extinct.

Did you know that Elephants are only being killed for there tusks. Tigers are only being killed for there bones to be shown exhibits. Rhinos are only being killed because the hunters want there horns. Whales are being killed because people want there baleen, also dogsare being killed because some people want to use there their teeth as necklaces accessories and they are being killed in japan because the Japanesepeople eat the dogs meat. Could you imagine being killed and skinned alive, Animals Have Rights You Know.

Did you know that at the black market they cell tiger fur for about $50, They cell horse hair and skin for about $100, They cell leaped & panther skin and fur for about $100 too. Cruelty is a fashion statement that we can all live without. Could you imagine being killed and skinned alive, Animals Have Rights You Know.

Did you know that exotic birds are being kept in cages so are pigs & dogs. God loved birds and invented tree's ,man loved tree's and invented cages. Could you imagine being killed skinned alive, Animals Have Rights You Know.

In conclusion do you think it is nice to keep animals in cages or being killed for fashion accessories or using the bones of animals for being shown in exhibits just for fun, so think about that, what can you do to help? and who's side are you on?The killers side or our side?

How to make a paper jet

awesome flying paper jet

You Will Need

Sellotape
A4 paper
Pens
Pencil / Colouring Pencils

Step One - Get your piece of paper and lay it down flat on a hard surface. Fold the piece of A4 paper in long ways. Then grab the top corner and fold that in to the middle were the line is, then do that with the other corner as well.

Step Two - Then fold the out side of the triangle to the middle line again, then repeat that with the other side too.

Step Three - Now fold the wings up so they are in a perfectly straight line with the middle crease. There you are all done.

Optional - Draw accessories on to the jet if you would like to.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. There are 4 sections in soccer Goalie, defender, midfielder, striker. To be goalie you have a goal box that you have to stay if your holding the ball, but you can run out of the box to kick the ball away.

2.Defenders help the goalie by stealing the ball from the strikers bolting up the field if the ball is in the opponents half run to half way.

3. Midfielders set up the goals by booting it up to the strikers & the strikers get the goals.

4. strikers always play up field & normally take shots at goal.

2 teams battle it out to win the match DO NOT steal the ball from your on team if its your first game look for the same costume as you & always steal the ball.

TIPS

Train regularly.
Maybe get some tricks off the Internet or your friends.

HOW TO MAKE COOL KIWIANA ART

Follow this guide, and learn how to make a cool, overlapping piece of art.

What you will need:

A paint brush
A apron
A3 piece of paper
dye
pastels
newspaper pad
A pencil and rubber
If necessary a knife
Some kiwiana pictures
black vivid

grab a pencil and apron and lay down a newspaper pad 'cause it might get messy!!!
Find some images that you want to draw, you should at have at least four objects.
Start sketching all the the things you draw should be bigger than your hand, the next thing you draw has to either cover or tuck in behind the first image.
Continue drawing until just about all of the page is filled up {make sure there is negative space}
use the black vivid to trace around the objects on the paper
Now, choose some coloured dye and fill the back round up completely with the dye.
Leave it dry, or if you have a hairdryer dry it with that.
Once dry, get the pastels and colour the pictures in.
If you want to, use the knife to carve out dome pastel to make awesome groves, and faded lines.
AND, YOU HAVE JUST MADE SOME OVERLAPPING KIWIANA ART!!!

The St Clair I know

The sea High on the St Clair hill

The sea dazzles and sparkles before my eyes

The reddish, yellow sun sits high in the sky making a sparkle to my day

The seagulls squawking above my head like a never-ending debate, planning to steal my fish ‘n’ chip tea

White island looming deep out at sea like a whales arching back*

I imagine the St Clair soldiers marching down the sand the poles are a reminder of those how fought.

Wind, and the rain *

might drive you insane *

But the views high up on those on those rolling hills, is enough to calm a tiger

The esplanade is busy attracting people to its amazing café’s begging people to come *

The dunes and views are never the same

The creatures are the things that make the eco-system complete

The cute little seals riding the waves

If you are lucky you might see frisky penguins bounding about

Dogs galloping up and down the beach never stoping for a breath

Get Hooked with St Clair

I f you get bored, keep reading for instructions on how to have a awesome day, jam-packed and fun at St Clair.

You will need:

If it is a sunny day you will need:

A surfboard
Sun block, hat
A change of clothes
A ball of some sort
Money
Gym shoes
some mates or a dog
A drink/food
(sun glasses)
A bag to carry your stuff

1. Get a map and study it the night before so you know your location. And find a park.

2. Then if you want to stay for a while you can book in at the motel right opposite the beach (majestic mansion)

3. Go to starfish for a tasty, delicious breakfast to charge you for the day. Then you can go for a walk a run or a bike along the track up by seconds beach (remember to take your drink)

4. Then you can go back to St Clair beach and you can go for a swim in the ocean (beware of sharks-ring the bell if sighted!) or surf out at seconds or St Clair.

5. Next you can go to Salt to refill on some drink and some hot chips. (This is when the money comes in handy)

6. After a filling lunch, grab your mates and play a ball game like rugby, and tennis or go for a swim at the hot salt water pool.

7. Then after a long day at St Clair, gave a shower and exercise you can go down for some pampering at St Clair spa to finish off your day.

8. If the weather turns bad you will need a back-up plan=You could go to the spa, or ice skating and play there, you could go for some tennis or badminton.

9. Next you can probably go home or back to the motel, after the exciting day!

3. Go for a jog down the beach with your dog and have a great time - make sure you dog doesn't swim out to close to the rocks or he might get pulled into a current or a rip !

3-D nets

Last week Rm 13 made a city out of 3-D shapes. It was really fun, we learnt we had to be good at certain things to make it work. And is wasn't all fun all fun and games, it was actually quite hard. We will show you how we made them.

First choose a shape, For instance, why don't we make a pyramid. First get a piece of paper and find the exact middle of the paper and put a small dot. Then draw a 6 by 6 square (making sure the dot stays in the middle) Next draw a 6cm triangle on each edge of the square. Finally you can draw the tabs on the opposite of each triangle. Now you can glue or cellotape the tabs to the shape.

Well, that's how you make a pyramid.
On our journey we learnt the names of shapes, vertices's, edges and faces. At home you could even make your own. We learnt we had to good at measuring.

Shags often nest in small colonies. Shags nest on rocky cliff edges, sea caves, & open seas.

Shags can have up too six eggs at one time,

Shags are also strong defenders they will fight back against its opponent by thrusting their beak at the attacker & screaming at it.

Shags natural features

A Shag has a long beak for catching fish and mainly sand eels. Their webbed feet and wings are for swimming and

their wings are also for flying. their height is 66-81 cm.

Human Impact

Lots of Shags die because of long lines,fishing,the oil spill,dumping waste and poo-lution

They live around the coasts of brighton, mainly the north &west.

Shags rivals

A Shag has enemy's including seal,sea lion,sea leopard and a shark they eat sand eels and fish.

The legend of Taiaroa's head

Long long ago above the clouds of Aotearoa lived Maui and the gods, and among them was Taiaroa Porima Flavell, tamaiti or son of Tane Mahuta and god of the land. Taina Te Ngahue taukine or sister of Mauri, goddess of wisdom and Manawa Rakate, whaea or mother of Maui and goddess of love.

One day Taiaroa and Taina got into a fight about who was toughest. (of course Taiaroa was) Taina clutched Manawa's taiaha as Taiaroa clutched his and they battled for three days and three nights until finally Taiaroa knocked down Taina and claimed his victory.

Manawa was outraged at what Taiaroa had done and knocked him out of the clouds with her taiaha and hurdled down after him. She smashed him down and made a harbour, then she ripped off his head, planted it next to him and let him sink down to the depths of the ocean.

So now if you glimpse over at Taiaroa's head you will know how and why Taiaroa Porima Flavell's head was planted there. It is there to remind people not to be big headed.

THE LEGEND OF THE ISLAND BROTHERS

One day a long time ago Kiwa the friendly whale set of to see Tangaroa the sea god. On the way, he spotted the Taniwha arguing with the keeper of the island. They were two island brothers came together as one. ZOOM!!! Kiwa raced to Tangaroa as fast as a cheetah on land running on land to Tangaroa to report what happened. Mean while Tamure was fishing not far behind the island he was catching the Taniwha's favourite fish father blue cods.

The Taniwha raced towards Tamure for the fish until the island gets in his way."You can not eat the villagers food, because you can not find any yourself. " said the island keeper wisely ," yes I can " replied the Taniwha rudely.He charged at the island and BOOM!!! "If you don't let me past , I will break you apart!" threatened the Taniwha. The island chose not to move, and the Taniwha had flames dancing in his eyes so he charged then aims for the top. SMASH!!!

Years later, people now see the islands as Green and White off the St Kilda, Seconds beach and St Clair Coast.

and on his travels he was told of an evil phsyco named Taiaroa and to watch out for his Taniwha.

When in Otepoti Taina was greeted by a kuia singing a waiata and young boys doing a haka.

When Manawa saw him it resulted in a hongi. (a traditional custom of rubbing the noses together) When Taina went to sleep he heard someone say "wheres the kumara.'' Taina awoke

and saw two Taniwha and a man with grey hair"Taiaroa"he mumbled. then the man looked straight at him his eyes glowing red. Taina picked up his Taiaha then the man vanished into thin air with an arm full of kumara the Taniwha escaping with a lot of kaimoana.

The next night at the Hui Taina told Manawa of Taiaroa and his Taniwha. So Manawa got his best warriors to hide in the kumara pit and a fleet of ten waka to look for the Taniwha. the men and the waka were never seen again. That night Taina went to the top of Otepotis highest mountain and prayed all night to Tangaroa god of the seas to capture and kill these Taniwha.

In the morning Taiaroa rode in on his Taniwha and slowly followed Manawa.

At noon warriors found Manawas headless body in his whare. Tangaroa replied to Taina in his sleep saying the Taniwha will be dead by morning. So Tangaroa rose from the sea and froze the

Taniwha into stone. Creating white island and green island Taina sent a message to Tuturangiwhiu to take up the responsibility of Manawas Tangi. meanwhile he would confront Taiaroa. when Taina got to the end of the peninsula and he heard a noise so he turned around and to his surprise Tuturangiwhiu was with his men and was carrying Taina's favourite Taiaha.

Tika tonu was being yelled in the distance Taina grabbed his Taiaha and got ready when a flurry of red lightning and dust was happening at the tip when Taiaroa was showing, Taina chopped off his head. Thats why at the end of the peninsula its called Taiaroa head.

The Great White Shark is the most feared sea animal.

The shark favours seals and fish in its diet.

The shark approaches its pray and starts to go around and around its prey so it so it has no where to go then SNAP the shark attacks with a mighty bite.

The shark has gills,fins,dorsal fin and skin like sand paper. the The shark has a powerful tall but the shark can not swim back wades. Sharks have four rows of teeth so if one comes out anther comes in its place.

There are many people how kill sharks for shark fin soup,necklaces and monuments.

Allot of sharks get killed from lost nets and habitat loss.

If to many sharks are killed there will be a dramatic change in the food chain. By luke otley

The amazing shark

The shark is one of the most feared sea creatures around the world but yet you are more likely to die from Christmas lights than to be gobbled up by a shark. The shark favors a big open space with a hole lot of food like fish , seal , penguins , young octopus and young squid. The shark uses its keen sense of smell to smell blood from kilometers away. Its bones are made out of the stuff in our nose and ears called cartilage the shark is a carnivore and is almost at the top of the food chain. The shark has gills on each side of its body used to collect oxygen from the water the shark has lots of fins around its hole body but has no function to swim backwards. The sharks eyes are based on the top of its head and cannot see under itself.

nowadays the human race has been wreaking their habitats and decreasing their food supplies and now the population of the sharks is going down for these reasons oil leaks and pollution , unnecessarily killing , fish nets and using parts of sharks for souvenirs or jewelry

A Penguin's Life

It was a fine summers day in Antarctica. I'm walking around with my friends. all of our stomachs are rumbling like mad. It's nearly dawn,It;s getting windier. It's never safe to eat,but we all made a decision...

We all waddled up onto an ice hill as slow as a snail. We were all nervous. One by one, we all slid down the ice hill on our stomaches and splashed into the icy waters below.

Then suddenly, I see a delicious , juicy squid. But the squid lets out a big , black cloud of ink. I went back up to the surface for a breath, then I see my dearest friends feathers and blood scattered all over the white ice. NO. It can''t be happening. I'm not hungry anymore.By Charlin

I dove back into the sea to get away from all the madness. I silently swam up behind a squid. Bam! It's all mine! I float back up for a breathe. I see my partner and my chicks waiting for me.I gave them the squid, and lay on the ground, to tired to move. We all watched as the beautiful sunset filled the sky.

people were playing the bag-pipes in one small room .

We all got up and waddled to the fishing hole soon we reached the fishing hole then suddenly my mate pushed me in "SPLASH" I swam up to the surface and everyone was laughing at me .

I said " come on guys come in" "no" They said so I dived back in then I saw a school of fish so I started to swim like a torpedo after them then suddenly my eyes widend I saw a orca so I shot away but smack I shot in to a leopard seal I closed my eyes and then I felt my tummy getting bit it was the seal I opened my eyes I was flying up to the clouds to a better home

PENGUIN POWER

It was an early summers day in Antarctica I was chatting away to my mates and sniffing the misty morning air, in the distance i saw some icebergs rocking away. My mates were discussing why the females get to eat first all the time. I was just relaxing while i was listening to the peace and tranquility of the vast nothingness.

"ooohh" look some tasty fish this day just got better, caught one, two , three fish ! "lets go back and relax" but something was on my iceberg, it was a large rock, wait a minute it wasn't there when i dove in was it? thats weird like a penguin trying to eat a Kina. It started to move oh no i have a woken a sleeping giant.

Suddenly the camouflaged rocks begin move and started to surround me. They crept closer and closer. I was starting to get scared looking up at the seal's razor sharp fangs dripping with other penguins blood. Then as it came almost to an end I remembered the jump my friends and I had been building, I leapt for the takeoff and soon realized that I hadn't build the rest of the slide, as quick as lightening i flew down the track and jumped off the ramp out into the air like a bee, a plane, a bird (not a penguin of course) and Bellyflopped to safety in the icy water.

I'm perched on a rock, gazzing into the crystal clear water. Watching the fish swimming around in circles makes me hungry! The warm wind is rustling through my feathers.

I count before I dive, 3,2,1 and i dive into the water like an olympic swimmer, my tummy rumbling. Then I catch my eye on the fish again. "The water is lovely and warm" I said to myself.

I zoomed after the fish, one right in front of me, I quickly snap my beak shut, but I just missed him, and he racers down into a little rock hole. "Darnet my lunch is gone".

My catches on another school of salmon, i race after them, I catch one them. "Yum" Then a massive shadow surrounds me it feels like night time. "Arh" the sharks got me.

The Aquarium Trip

On Tuesday the 27Th of April Room 13 and 14 went on the bus to the aquarium in Portobello when we got there we walked down the hill we went there because we needed to learn about fish. firstly we hopped off the bus and walked down the wiggly path and walked in the amazing aquarium then we went in the conference room and had some morning tea while talking.

Secondly the Lady's told what groups to go where the first group went to the dog fish shark and it can give you an electric shok and the water crashes in from the harbour.

then we went to the room that had a shark jaw in it and we learnt about filter feeders and zoo plankton and plankton we got to hold a shark's jaw's.

next we went to the touch tanks she told us about the pig fish and the sea cucumber and some mussels. I picked up a sea Cucumber,a kina,Star fish and a Hermit crab. After the touch tanks we looked at the mini aquariums they had a pig fish a sea cucumber and other amazing fish.

Finally we went back to the conference room and talked about what eats what and what we eat then we scrambled up the hill to the bus and went back to school.

Aquarium Adventure

On Tuesday 27 of April room 13 and 14 went to the aquarium . We went there because we were learning about St.Clair cost line and sea creatures . It took a long time to get to Portobello. Firstly we scrabbled off the bus and onto the path we rolled down the path to the aquarium and I opened the big heavy doors and we went into the big conference room and tucked into are yummy morning tea.

Secondly we split into are groups and we followed leader and marched down to the touch tanks and looked at all the funny and horrendous looking fish.In the mini rock pools I held a sea cucumber it felt like an deed eel and when I lifted it up I found a Neptunes Neckles on it. I learnt that there was a such thing as a pig fish it looked horrendous.Laura took us in to the lab when we got in there I was so amazed of all the cool technology after we had used the micro scopes I felt like a crazy scientist. Are last event was the the foyer it was pretty cool looking at all the sharks, blue cod, Munk fish and sting rays and much much more. Then I saw a model of the colossal squid it had bright pink skin and it had razor sharp claws and black beady eyes. Last of all we headed back up to the conference room got are bags jogged up the twisty and slippery path, sprang into the bus and the bus headed back to school and I just hoped that a colossal squid dose not wipe me out in the surf.

Portobello Aquarium

On Tuesday the 27th of April, room 13 and 14 got on the bus and headed out to the Portobello aquarium. It was a long drive. Finally we reached the aquarium, we all scrambled out of the bus like a swarm of bees, and ran down the twisty concrete path to the marine aquarium doors.

We were all very excited, but we were inside now so we had to calm down and walk into the conference room. We sat down and had some of our morning tea.

After morning tea we split into 3 groups, my group went down to the fish and the baby sharks with the big squid above the tanks. In the big fish tank there was baby salmon, blue cod and the Pig fish that were disguised as rocks and they ate seaweed.

Then we moved on to the crab with the nets and comb. The crab had nets to scoop the food and used its comb to comb it out of the nets and put it in its mouth. It was like someone was brushing their hair.

Our station was the touch tank where we got to touch Starfish, Cancer Crabs, Sea snails and Sea Cucumber. The touch tank were like rock pools.

To conclude the visit we went up to the conference room and had a discussion on what we eat and what eats us. Then it it was time to go and we went out into the shop area that was when my eye caught the sharks jaw, it was huge Then we carried on running up the hill. The aquarium was really good and i'm glad my dad came too.

The Aquarium!!!!!!

On Tuesday the 27th Rm 13 and Rm 14 went to the Portebello Marine Aquarium, for our coast to coast inquiry investigation.

Firstly, we hopped off the bus and walked down the slippery path steep path, and sat down in the conference area and ate our morning tea while the staff were talking to us about what lives in the Dunedin City harbor.

Secondly we spilt into our 3 groups and trotted out of the conference area. And my group went to the touch tank first and 1 of the staff told us about the octopus, seahorse, pigfish, sea stars and many more. Did you know that some fish can actually spit out their guts and intestines to protect it's self

Then we went to the lab where we watched Luara (one of the staff) show us some Zooplankton and that 70-80 percent of the worlds air comes from Zooplankton! We had a look through some microscopes at some weird but amazing sea creatures. The sea cucumber looked like a long slinky except in a bowl.

Finally we went to our the two big fish tanks, and in the first tank there were some fish and some baby salmon. And in the other tank there were some mini sharks but they were actually big dog fish!! And some fish that catch their prey from the bottom of the floor! (ambush predators) On the top of the roof was a huge life size model of the Colossal squid with it's huge beady eyes, and the beak it was MASSIVE and it was reflecting of the water.

To conclude we went back to the conference area and talked about all the sea creatures and how speacial they are and the food chains. Finally we hopped on the bus again and speed back to school.

On tuesday the twenty-seventh of April room 13 and 14 went to the aquarium. we went because it was part of our inquiry. it was at portobello harbor.

Firstly we hopped out of the path and jogged down the craggy and jagged path then we walked into the conference room and had some morning tea.

next we split into groups and set off. I learnt that a octopus actually has a beak instead of a mouth and thats not all its in between its eight legs. laura one of the leaders is a marine biologist and an educator shelly helped us with the microscopes all the microscopic animals

after that we went to an electrical microscope where we watched a crab filter feeding it was our last activity .

finally we walked to the conference room and had a look at a food chain and we were at the top. also the colossal squid above the looked like it had security camera in its eye

Aquarim visit

On Tuesday the 27th of April Rm 13 and 14 took a long trip in the giant school bus to the Portibelo marine Aquarium part of our coast to coast inquiry. Firstly we jumped of the bus like a pack of jumping beans and wandered down the path and into the Portibelo Aquarium. We had shivers of excitement springing up some of our spines.

Then we all gathered into a conference and sat down and had a nibble of mourning tea, to eat while the instructors talked to us about what might live out in the harbor and what they eat. Then after our brief descution we all scattered into our 3 groups.

Then we went to the touch tanks and talked about what lies beneath the tanks. The tanks were like little tiny rock pools. The we looked at the giant octopus and how it can be poisoniss. After that we looked at the spiny sea star and how it picks up cocals raps its arms around it and finally the cocals weaken its shell and lets go and the spiny sea star gets a tasty snack.

Then we felt the star fish, sea stars with slimy sea cucumber and learnt that if a predator picked it up it would through out its guts and crawls away and grows new guts. Our next stop was the room with a TV and we looked at how tiny zooplankton is. It looked like tiny stars glistening in the night sky. Laura the staff member/ instructor showed us the seaweed how it moves to the sun. The seaweed looked so slimy it looked as if it was smeared with oil all over it. Then she said how an average sized mussel drinks 7 letres per hour. wow. Then we looked through the microscopes. We had to have peering eyes looking and learnt that 70% of our water comes from zooplankton.

our last station was out in the shivering cold. We looked at the flowing pond like pools and saw a colossal squid luring above the water with its giant eyes starring into yours. it was kind of creepy. There were weird but amazing creatures there. We also looked at a kina and how it covers itself in its own food, then we felt a spiny dog fish/shark. One way it was spiky and the other way it was as smooth as the clear smooth water of a harbor. Then we walked slowly up the path past a stuffed seal and then back into the conference room. We listened carefully and talked about what eats what and marine things we humans eat. It was a brief talk. Then Max said thank you then we all clattered outside into the cooling drizzle and the frocolis wind and up the steep steps an up the slab of concrete and into the warm bus. I had a marvelous time and the best part of all was when we got to feel things in the rock pools and learnt lots of facts. what a day we had!

On Tuesday the 27th of April, room 13 and 14 visited the Portebello aquarium for our inquiry.

Firstly we hoped off the bus and went in the conference room and got out our morning tea out Baylee and sat by each other then Victoria told us about some stuff about living creatures in the sea.

Secondly Victoria took our group down to the giant colossal squid and Victoria told us that a squid can change colors when they need to camouflage them self.

Next we had a look at the touch tank we got to hold star fish which they call a sea star instead cause it is not a fish but the sea star felt like a prickle bush.

Then we went to the lab and got told that most seaweed is full of water then we went to the conference room and talked about what we eat.

On the way back we were all tierd but I know I loved the trip to the aquarium and when we were on the bus Baylee, Olivia and I all talked about the trip it was an amazing day.

Easter Bunny

Firstly I woke up in bed then I got all my easter eggs.

Then I woke my brother and he also got his easter eggs.

He had to share some with me and I had the chocolate part.

We travelled in the car back to our shop and got two more easter eggs and my brother got two aswell.

He got the bigger one.

I had some of his easter egg it tasted great and it was so yummy.

It was the best day ever.

The aquarium visit

On Tuesday 27Th of April 13 and 14 took the bus to the Portobello aquarium for our coast to coast inquiry.

Firstly we jumped of the bus,ran down the slippery, windy path and into the conference room for morning tea.

Secondly we split into our groups. Then we went down to where the sharks and the big fish lived.We found out that one of the types of fish in the big tank ate sea weed and disguised itself as rocks.

We moved on to the touching tanks.We got to pick up a squishy sea cucumber and it felt like slime. We also saw a pig fish,crabs,sea stars and sea horses they were fascinating.

Our last place to go was going to the lab. When we got in side we saw zoo plankton. They looked like stars.

To conclude after our discussion we happily walked through the door saying that that was the best trip so far.

Worm Farm Update

All of the worms are going good.We are getting heaps of worm juice.

Room 13 have been going out with buckets and asking if people want to put

there scraps in to feed the worms.We all get heaps of scraps every day and

that's GOOD.When we are finished getting scraps we get the key and

open up the worm farm and tip the buckets in and all the food scraps fall

out in the worm farm.So after that we have lunch and I guess the worms do too.

Aquarium Visit

On Tuesday the 27th of April rm 13 and 14 of St Clair school embarked on an adventure to the Portobello marine aquarium as part of our coast to coast inquiry.

Firstly we scrambled off the Otago Road Service bus and jogged down the wet and windy path ignoring the don't run sign. We then were ushered into the Portebello marine aquarium conference room to settle down to some morning tea.

Secondly we split into our groups and followed our marine biologist and marched down to the touch tanks and looked at the funny and horrendous looking fish. I learnt that there was a fish called a pigfish it carefully blended with it's sounding in the kelp.

Then we went to the lab where Laura showed us some zoo plankton and she told us that 70% of our air comes from zoo plankton. Then we had a look threw some microscopes at some weird but amazing creatures. The sea cucumber looked like a long slinky in a bowl. The Duck Billed limpet looked like a Paua removed from its shell.

Next we observed the large holding tanks. One was the shark tank with loads of baby dog fish in it and the other was full of Blue Moki, Blue Cod and Trumpeter. Hanging above the shark tank was a life size model of a Colossal squid.

To Conclude we returned to the conference room and Max thanked the aquarium staff and parent helpers. On our way out I caught sight of the jaws from a Great White Shark and i wondered what it would be like if one decided to bite you. I turned and glanced back at the picturesque aquarium, i loved it and I can't wait until the next time I come to visit.

Christchurch

Firstly we drove in mums car to Oamaru then to Timaru then we finally got to Christchurch . Then we got a ice cream because we were so hungry . The only reason why we were going up there was cause we needed a holiday . When Mum , David and I got to the Scenic Circle which was were we here staying we went straight to sleep when we got there . In Christchurch I went to Qe2 . Qe2 was brilliant I loved it so much it was fun on the hydroslides , there were the good Blue Tue , fabulous Cyclops , great Green Tube , exciting Body Bullet and the most trippy one was called the terror tube but David likes to call it the toilet of terror , it was trippy like a tunnel with lights flashing one bye one at the same time but it was still awsome . Next when got home Ifelt so exhausted that I could just fall asleep on the coutch at the Scenic Circle . And we just all went stright to sleep . After that we woke up to go to Orana Park when we got to Orana Park we saw that it was 100 dollars to sit in the cheetahs center to play with them and pat them for 30 minits so we wernt doing that . But the tigers were only 50 dollars to pat . I really wanted to go inside with the tigers and cheetahs. Sadly the mum of the baby cheetah cubs past-away just after when she had , had her baby cheetah cubs it was very sad but the baby cheetah cubs still have her with them because they bered her in the cheetah cubs pen .When mum , david and I got home we went to Mc Donalds to go get tea and ice-cream Mum got a caramel ice-cream , David got a caramel ice-cream to , And I got a strawberry ice-cream mum said Iwas the odd one out .

To Conclude we all went home ant home and straight to sleep ! p:s - it was awsome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .

Kayaking in Karitane !

firstly I got out of bed at about 9:30 and had some nutri-grain for breakfast. It was the middle of the school holidays and my dad, my brother, my cousin, his friend and I were all going kayaking in Karratane!

Secondly we got the equipment and set off down the road to the river. When we got there we put the kayaks in the river and got in them. Dad said it was better to go up stream first so we didn't have to on the way back,and we did.

After about fifteen minutes of rowing like olympic champions we took another branch (another way)off the main river. My brother and cousin couldn't keep up so they didn't see us take the branch. We just hoped they'd figure it out and go back too

The route we took was freaky because there was metal spiked balls that made me think something was waiting or after us.There was boggy water as well. Not like the ones in the movies, just greenish, kind of shallow water.

I even had to sit at the very front of the kayak with no seat like a duck because my dad was putting to much weight at the back of it.

Finally after what seemed like an hour of rowing we reached the jeep where my brother and cousin were waiting for us. It was kind of funny how my cousin kept on saying how scared he was, because for the last week of me and my brothers living with with him he kept on saying how much he hated me.

To conclude we all went home safe and sound. But something about those spiky metal balls still made me think something was waiting for us

The Surf comp!

In the weekend I went to a surf comp and their was pros there and long boarders. Xaver jacob and I went looking for stuff on the beach and I found a fin on the rocks. Then we found a tennis ball but then we went for a surf. After we had a surf we went looking for mussels off the point.

it was a fun day at the beach.

Estuaries

An estuary is the end of a river where it meets the sea. Estuaries have many different types of wildlife. Estuaries will help us provide fish for the future. Estuaries are very high in biodiversity which helps all types of fish breed which,helps commercial fishing at the present and the time to come.

On Tuesday 9th March , Jaedon's sister brought her cute little rabbit to room 13. When everyone sat down in a circle,she opened a tiny cage with little,ripped newspaper in it.Jaedon told us that his name was Jay-jay. First he came to Ruarri so we patted Jay-jay's fluffy back and near the neck . Then ,when Jaedon's sister tried to pick him up , he bounced from her sholder and onto the floor and exhilarated to a big group of girls. Mr Hunter asked her what Jay-jay liked to eat so she told him that he liked to eat cucumbers with salt. Finally when she was leaving we gave one last pat said goodbye to the cool rabbit.

Firstly Mr Hunter found a bath and brought it to school. Secondly Sue's husband built a frame for it. Then we had to clean it Manawa , Jaedon and Ruarri poured fresh water in the bath. Next we studied and observed the old worm farm and some dead flies on the windowsill. After that we discussed problems between Pro's and Con's, some people might tip it over if there was no frame. Finally we needed a lid and a lock to keep it from being vandalized. Today we will deign the front of our worm farm, its going to be awesome everyone is going to be apart of it, it is going to be amazing. Later on we transferred the worms from room 14 to the bath. Then we got mesh or chicken wire as some might call it because we don't want the worms to get out of the bath.We had to add gravel and rocks to it to make it not so easy to get out but they can't any way. Then we added soil. Some people had to save the worms it was very gross. Roy had to add a lid to it, it looks really awesome but gross. Luke and Tyrone got some apple cores and a lot of things. Jack gave the food to the worms but before that jack got in the bath and they love it. To conclude the worms will give us juice disposal and I feel great because the worms are out side in there normal heritage they are ready to rock and roll and give us juice.

firstly Mr H found a bath on Richardson street with a free sign on it and brought it to school. Secondly Sue's husband built a frame. Then we cleaned out the bath.

Next we observed the old worm farm it smelt like a corpse flower, then we saw the window sill it had 100's of dead flies on it it looked like a fallen army. We lifted the lid and there was maggot eggs under the lid ewww! Then flies shot out like a swarm of bees.

After we discussed the pros and cons of the two worm farms. we talked about teenagers destroying it and birds eating the worms in the end we decided we needed a lid and a lock. We found out that we are not to feed them citrus.

The next day we viewed a school called Melville intermediate's blog they also had a worm farm!

Secondly Miss C's husband built a frame for the bath tub to keep it steady so it didn't fall over. Miss C's husband did a brilliant job at building the frame.

Then Manawa, Jaedon and Ruarri filled up buckets of water to splash the bath tub clean. when they where splashing the bath tub clean some of us got to close to the bath tub and got a bit wet.

Next we studied/observed the old worm farm to see the Pros and Con's. As soon as we stepped 2 meter's close it smelt so bad it was like being trapped in dumpster land where all the scraps and rubbish goes.Mr Hunter showed us the inside then he lifted up the lid. On the lid was heaps of maggot egg's that made some our stomach's flip.

After that we went into the class and looked at another schools worm farm. Then we did a chart for the Pros and Con's for the worm farm being outside and inside.

Finally we decided we needed a lid, chicken wire and rocks. We asked Rory to kindly build a lid and to kindly give us some chicken wire. In no time the lid was done. Miss Faithful kindly gave us some rocks.

On Thursday rm13 and rm12 walked to St Clair Surf Life Saving Club.

Firstly we walked inside the clubhouse and put our bags full of swimming gear on the hooks in the changing room then sat on the mat.

Then we had a really long speech on how to keep safe.

Next we had a break and ate some food and went to the park to play.

After that we went inside and had another long break and learnt about the most appropriate clothes to wear to the beach.

Finally we went outside to the beach and played follow the leader. A few minutes later we ran in to the water and had a swim around and I was getting bowled over by massive waves.

To conclude the most exiting part of the day was getting bowled over by the colossal waves sometimes I wish I could do it every single day instead of boring school work

the Thursday we set of to beach Ed. When we got there, there were 3 life guards waiting for us. Then all room 13 and 12 tired kids walked in with there bogie boards to the changing rooms to put our stuff down. The lifeguards led us into a room with a little mat to sit and a TV to watch about being sun smart and the ten safety rules extra... We stared of by watching a DVD about being sun smart. Then we dressed up Bob in some sun smart clothes. After that we had some morning tea and a played in the playground. When we came in they showed us the first aid room

we got to see the oxygen tanks, all about their I.R.Bs and the old fashion boats, which had no motor just pedals. We learned the 10 safety rules. Then we dressed up one of the Kids as a lifeguard. After that we went down to the beach for the rest of the day we played games and had a swim. Mr Hunter took photos but after a lovely day it was time to leave this wonderful journey with heaps to add in the future.

On Thursday the 11 of February, rooms 13 and 12 walked down to St Clair beach for beach Ed. while the tired hauled boogie boards and bags, up the ramp to St Clair beach, where the lifeguards were already waiting for them. The lifeguards led them inside and the learning began.

We got underway by watching a DVD about being sun smart, and then we dressed Bob to make him sun smart. So then we had some yummy morning tea and went to play. W hen we came in they rounded us up and showed us round the hole clubhouse, we got to see the oxygen tanks

and the I.R.B 's and then we leant about rip currents. After that we went out for a second interval, and then we put on our swimming gear ran down to the beach. Before we went swimming we played octopus and built sandcastles, then it was time,we sprinted out to the surf we knelled, sat

and even lay down. But then we got our boogie boards and sprinted out into the waves while Mr Hunter took photos of us riding back. But sadly the time came when we had to leave. When we got back every one raced to there parents and told them about about there wonderful day.
